What Do Baby Bearded Dragons Eat? A Complete Food Guide

What Do Baby Bearded Dragons Eat? A Complete Food Guide

The Baby Beardie Diet Breakdown

Baby bearded dragons have very different nutritional needs than adults. Their rapid growth demands high protein from live insects, but vegetables and calcium supplementation are equally critical.

General ratio for babies (0–6 months):

  • 70–80% live insects
  • 20–30% leafy greens and vegetables

Best Feeder Insects

Staple Insects (Feed Daily)

  • Dubia roaches — best nutritional profile, low odor, can't climb glass
  • Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) — high calcium, great for babies
  • Crickets — widely available, but noisy and escape-prone

Occasional Insects (1–2x per week)

  • Hornworms — high moisture, great hydration boost
  • Silkworms — excellent protein and low fat
  • Waxworms — treat only, very high fat

Never feed: fireflies, wild-caught insects, avocado, rhubarb, or citrus fruits.

Safe Vegetables and Greens

Offer greens every day even when babies are primarily eating insects. This establishes good eating habits for adulthood.

| Food | Notes | |------|-------| | Collard greens | ✅ Excellent staple | | Mustard greens | ✅ Great choice | | Dandelion greens | ✅ High calcium | | Turnip greens | ✅ Good rotation | | Kale | ⚠️ In moderation | | Spinach | ❌ Blocks calcium | | Iceberg lettuce | ❌ No nutrition |

Supplementation

Supplements are non-negotiable for captive beardies.

  • Calcium without D3 — dust insects at every feeding
  • Calcium with D3 — 2–3x per week if UVB is good
  • Multivitamin — once per week

Use a phosphorus-free calcium powder and store it in a dry place.

Water

Baby beardies rarely drink from bowls but should be offered water. The best method is a warm shallow bath 2–3 times per week — they'll often drink during soaks.

Misting the greens lightly can also help with hydration.

Portion Sizes

A common rule: offer insects for 10–15 minutes, then remove uneaten ones. For size, nothing larger than the space between the eyes.

Summary

A varied diet of quality feeder insects, fresh leafy greens, and proper supplementation is the foundation of a healthy baby beardie. Rotate feeders and greens to ensure balanced nutrition.
