Choosing the Right Tank Size
For a baby bearded dragon (under 3 months), a 20-gallon tank can work temporarily, but you'll want to upgrade to a 40-gallon breeder by 3 months. Juveniles (3β12 months) need 40β75 gallons.
| Age | Minimum Tank Size | |-----|------------------| | 0β3 months | 20 gallon | | 3β6 months | 40 gallon breeder | | 6β12 months | 55β75 gallon | | Adult (12+ months) | 120 gallon |
Heating Setup
Bearded dragons are ectothermic β they regulate body temperature using their environment. You need a thermal gradient from hot to cool.
Basking Side
- Basking spot: 105β110Β°F for babies
- Use a halogen flood bulb (50β100W depending on fixture distance)
- Place a flat rock or slate tile under the basking light
Cool Side
- Ambient cool side: 80β85Β°F
- Night minimum: 65Β°F (use a ceramic heat emitter if needed)
UVB Lighting
This is the most critical component. Bearded dragons must have UVB to synthesize vitamin D3 and absorb calcium.
- Best options: Arcadia 12% T5 HO, Reptisun 10.0 T5 HO
- Mount inside the enclosure if using a mesh top (mesh blocks 30β50% of UVB)
- Replace every 6 months
- Run for 12β14 hours daily
Substrate Options
For babies, tile or paper towels are safest. Loose substrates like sand or calcium sand can cause impaction β a life-threatening blockage.
| Substrate | Safety for Babies | |-----------|------------------| | Ceramic tile | β Best | | Paper towels | β Great for monitoring | | Reptile carpet | β οΈ Toes can get caught | | Play sand | β Impaction risk | | Calcium sand | β Dangerous |
Hides and Decor
Provide at least one hide on the cool side. Add:
- Flat rocks for basking (absorb and radiate heat)
- Fake plants for enrichment
- Branches for climbing (low and sturdy for babies)
Keep decor minimal for babies β it's easier to spot mites, shed issues, and droppings.
Temperature Monitoring
Invest in a temperature gun (infrared thermometer). Dial thermometers and stick-on gauges are notoriously inaccurate. Check temperatures daily at first.
Summary
A proper setup is the single biggest factor in your baby beardie's health. Nail the temperatures, get quality UVB, and use safe substrate, and you'll have a thriving dragon.
