Is This Normal?
A baby bearded dragon refusing food can be alarming, but it's often temporary and fixable. Baby dragons should eat eagerly — if yours hasn't eaten in more than 3 days, it's time to investigate.
Most Common Reasons
1. Incorrect Temperatures
This is the #1 cause of appetite loss. If the basking spot is below 100°F, your dragon cannot properly digest food and will stop eating.
Check: Use an infrared thermometer (not a dial gauge). Basking spot should be 105–110°F for babies.
2. Shedding (Dysecdysis)
Bearded dragons often refuse food when they're about to shed. Look for:
- Dull, pale skin
- Puffy appearance
- Rubbing against decor
Solution: Offer warm baths, don't force-feed, wait it out. They'll eat once the shed is complete.
3. New Environment Stress
Newly acquired dragons often refuse food for 1–2 weeks as they adjust. This is normal.
Solution: Minimize handling, keep the environment consistent, and keep offering food daily.
4. Illness or Parasites
If your dragon has been eating well and suddenly stops, combined with other symptoms (lethargy, runny stools, weight loss), see a vet.
Common culprits:
- Coccidia (parasites)
- Adenovirus
- Respiratory infection
5. Brumation
Dragons over 10–12 months may enter brumation (reptile hibernation) in autumn/winter. True brumation in babies under 1 year is rare but possible.
Signs: Sleeping more, hiding, refusing food for weeks.
6. Overhandling
Too much handling stresses young dragons and suppresses appetite.
Rule: Maximum 10–15 minutes of handling per day for babies.
