Baby Bearded Dragon Lighting & UVB: Setup Guide

Baby Bearded Dragon Lighting & UVB: Setup Guide

Why UVB Lighting Is Critical

Bearded dragons synthesize vitamin D3 through exposure to UVB radiation β€” the same way humans produce it from sunlight. Without sufficient D3, they cannot absorb calcium, leading to Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD).

MBD causes:

  • Soft, deformed bones
  • Tremors and seizures
  • Inability to walk properly
  • Death if untreated

The good news: it's completely preventable with proper UVB setup.

Types of UVB Bulbs

T5 HO Fluorescent Tubes (Recommended)

T5 High Output tubes are the gold standard for bearded dragons. They produce strong, consistent UVB across the full length of the enclosure.

Top picks:

  • Arcadia Desert 12% T5 HO β€” industry favorite, excellent output
  • Zoo Med Reptisun 10.0 T5 HO β€” widely available, good quality

Compact/Coil Bulbs (Not Recommended)

These produce uneven UVB and have been linked to eye damage in reptiles. Avoid them entirely.

Mercury Vapor Bulbs (Advanced)

Combine heat and UVB in one bulb. Can work well but are harder to control and more expensive.

Positioning Your UVB Bulb

| Setup Type | Ideal Distance from Basking Spot | |-----------|----------------------------------| | T5 HO inside enclosure (no mesh) | 12–18 inches | | T5 HO above mesh top | 6–10 inches | | T8 tube | 6–8 inches max |

Mesh warning: Standard reptile mesh blocks 30–50% of UVB. Always account for this by moving the bulb closer or mounting it inside.

UVI (UV Index) Targets

Bearded dragons in the wild experience very high UV exposure. Aim for a UVI of 3–5 in the basking zone.

A Solarmeter 6.5 can measure UVI accurately, though it's an optional investment.

Photoperiod (Light Schedule)

  • Summer simulation: 14 hours light / 10 hours dark
  • Winter simulation: 10 hours light / 14 hours dark
  • Using a timer makes this effortless

Bulb Replacement

UVB output degrades before the visible light burns out. Replace every 6 months on a schedule β€” write the date on the bulb with a marker.

Basking Light

Separate from UVB, your basking light provides heat only. Use:

  • Halogen flood bulbs (PAR38, PAR30)
  • Standard incandescent bulbs

Avoid: colored bulbs, "red" or "blue" night bulbs, compact fluorescents for basking.

Summary

Quality UVB lighting is the single most important investment for your baby bearded dragon's long-term health. Buy a T5 HO tube from a reputable brand, position it correctly, and replace it every 6 months β€” no exceptions.
